Two years ago, Minnesota was running a budget surplus of over $20 Billion. That means the government was overtaxing Minnesotans by so much that they could’ve turned around and given each taxpayer $8,000 back. Or…they could’ve given taxpayers a one year income tax holiday.
Think of that economic boom!
Unfortunately, when Governor Walz and Democrats took over control of the entire state government following the 2022 election, Walz and company used the taxpayers’ surplus money on increasing the state government by a whopping 36%!
Because they set the state on an unsustainable path, the Minnesota Management and Budget is now predicting a budget deficit of $5 Billion in Fiscal Years 2028-29.
With an upcoming budget deficit, Democrats and weak-kneed Republicans will look to raid the reserve funds (money taken from taxpayers and left in a government account) or try to increase taxes on Minnesota families.
There’s a much easier and better solution both for Minnesota families and the overall economy. Walz and legislators can cut government spending back to the levels of spending that occurred before they took over in 2023. And they should return the money that is sitting in the government’s reserve account, because that is taxpayer’s money.
This would create an $18 Billion budget surplus and economic boom for Minnesota families. It would put downward pressure on the FY2028-29 budget so there is no longer a deficit.
