Sen Morrison Resigns; Democrats No Longer Have Majority in Minnesota Senate

Far left State Senator Kelly Morrison (DFL-Deephaven) resigned her Senate seat yesterday, a day before the legal requirement for a special election to be put on the November ballot. Morrison is favored to win the Congressional seat vacated by Dean Phillips and according to her statement, wants to “focus full-time’ on her campaign.

As a senator, Morrison voted for all the radical legislation passed by the Democrat majority including gun control, spending the record $20 Billion surplus on more government, legalizing genital mutilation surgery for minors and making pedophilia a protected sexual orientation in the Minnesota Human Rights Act.

Morrison’s resignation means the Minnesota Senate is now tied 33 to 33 between Democrats and Republicans. The Legislature adjourned last month and is not likely to meet again until after the next election. But if a special session is called, there is likely going to be a grid lock.

Her district has gone Democrat in the last several election cycles, but is still considered a potential pick up for Republicans. Morrison won the seat by a 13 point margin in the mini-blue wave of the 2022 election.

Governor Tim Walz will call a special election soon which will determine the filing period for candidates wishing to run for the open seat. Those candidates will compete in the regular August primary and November general election.
